This art group has an excellent exhibition on the Hudson River, with aerial photos and a section-by-section guide to highlights and low spots between Troy and Manhattan. They’re publishing a book; in the meantime, there’s this introductory article.

The Gallery

These are photos of the Deitch Gallery in Long Island City, Queens. The gallery is just south of the Queensborough Bridge and directly across the East River from the southern tip of Rosevelt Island and, just beyond, the United Nations. The concrete dock space is 110-feet long.

The first image is looking north toward Queensborough bridge. The wooden dock is off limits. The second image is looking south. Matthew Barney’s studio starts on the other side of the chain link fence.

This is the main room of the gallery. Ceilings are roughly 30 feet, and the room is roughly 45 x 100.

The first image is the front of the gallery, looking out on to the dock. The second is the back of the gallery, again looking toward the main doors and the front of the space.

Raft 3: Grandson of Town Hall

Filed under: Uncategorized — jstark @ 2:12 pm

This is another pontoon-style raft, modeled on the Floating Neutrinos Son of Town Hall. It is 12×15. This is the project’s locker room and storage unit. The skin is changeable, but the original dimensions should remain — except for a cut-away on the stern roof deck to allow for propulsion.

The above model starts at the deck and does not include pontoons.

Boat 3: Skiff

Filed under: Uncategorized — jstark @ 2:00 pm

This will likely be an existing boat with a modified hull. We’re going to look at older wooden sailboats first. It should be a minimum 16-feet long, up to 30-feet, depending on what we find. Those arched panels are corrugated steel.

Boat 2: Fish Gondola

Filed under: Uncategorized — jstark @ 1:54 pm

This design will likely be a 20-foot aluminum canoe with fish scales, pieced together in Los Angeles for a gallery show and shipped to New York.

These canoes can be outfitted with a bracket that allows for a 3-6 horsepower motor.

Raft 2: Barrel Junk

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — jstark @ 1:42 pm

This is a barrel raft with 8 55-gallon plastic drums. The current size is roughly 6×8, although Callie says dimensions can change to accommodate alternate propulsion systems. The craft will likely need dagger boards (removable keels) in order to stabilize the non-functioning sails.

Sketch Up plans. Note: The actual deck of this thing is 15-inches above the barrels.

Boat 1: Tatlin

This started out a raft, but the current idea is to decorate the 45 -foot Kinetic Steam Works paddlewheel launch.

Raft 1: Bangkok

This is a 16×20 raft with two 4×20x2 pontoons. It is 18 feet tall. There are 1×20 running boards on the port and starboard sides. The model is deck and above only.

Bow is on the right, stern on the left. Propulsion represented by black trashcan shape.

Hudson Group

These are six of the seven crafts. The top three are rafts. The bottom two are modified pre-existing boat hulls. Below are some photos of some of the various individual crafts. The last image is of the raft inspired by the Floating Neutrino’s Son of Town Hall.
